TAMING THE US CONGRESS
Cronyism is now an economic system.sm
Liberals, conservatives, and moderates in the US all have one thing in common. The US Congress and their cronies are robbing us at an alarming rate and they will not stop on their own. Before the stimulus programs, billions of dollars allocated for wars and social programs disappeared into the coffers of Congressional cronies. That continues today. Regardless of political philosophy, we must all work together to stop the corruption and support our political agendas as separate issues.

As usual, Congress has failed to disclose the full cost of its program. The stimulus portion of the bailout will, without taxpayer intervention, reach $3 trillion. This money is continuing to be spent and more has already been requested. The total bailout is much larger, however. According to CNN Money, the total bailout bill is $8 trillion. According to Fox News is could reach $23.7 trillion. Mother Jones pegs it at $3 trillion. And the New York Times calls it $12.2 trillion.

(details are available at www.no-incumbents.org/bailout.html)

Had the Congress provided between $9,868.43 and $77,960.53 (based upon the projected bailout totals shown above) to every man, woman, and child in the United States, we would have stimulated the economy with purchases. (We are not endorsing this approach, but find it preferable to giving money to incompetent bankers.) Instead, we failed to accomplish the stated goals and have rewarded the incompetent and/or corrupt bank and insurance executives who, with Congress, created a global financial disaster.

Consider the following:
  • Congress told the American people that we needed to use government funds (debt) to stimulate the economy and save the financial institutions.
  • The Congress supposedly allocated only(?) about $700 billion (really, it's $3 trillion) to help the banks and insurance companies, that were apparently run by incompetent and/or corrupt executives, so that they could make loans to people who wanted to buy cars and build houses. This would stimulate the economy. That money was supposedly needed immediately in order to make the loans quickly.
  • A Congress full of attorneys could not figure out how, even using the power of the US government, to force the banks to make the loans to stimulate the economy.
  • A Congress full of attorneys could not figure out how, even using the power of the US government, to force the banks and insurance companies to record and report their expenditures of US tax dollars.
  • A Congress full of attorneys could not figure out how, even using the power of the US government, to keep the companies from rewarding the incompetent and/or corrupt executives of these companies with millions in bonuses from taxpayer money. Apparently they knew how, because it was in the bill and then removed.
  • Congress can't even keep good records of the distribution of this money.
  • Congress decided to give the bailout money to companies that were poorly run and required no criteria for change, allowing incompetent and/or corrupt executives from failing companies to acquire smaller successful companies. If there are MBAs in Congress, they must have attended the same colleges as the attorneys. It seems that when people fail, you fire them and get other people instead of providing bonuses.
  • Maybe these people are in Congress because they cannot function effectively in jobs where performance and good decisions are a priority.

Perhaps it should be noted that the companies that got the most bailout money also spent the most money on lobbying. Now they will likely use taxpayer money to lobby for more taxpayer money.

While many taxpayers struggle, Congress recently attempted to reward itself for its incompetence with $550 million worth of new jets for their own use. Most of these jets cost have a 12 person capacity and cost $3,000 an hour to operate. The operational cost for Congressional trips (spouses allowed) on these planes will exceed the cost of commercial air travel even without factoring in the cost and depreciation of the planes. Because of taxpayer response, Congress only purchased $220 million dollars worth of new planes.

As the Congress debates health care, we need to provide the message that they had better get it right. Drug companies, insurance companies, the American Medical Association, and other special interest groups are spending over a $1,000,000 a day to influence Congressional decisions. They are not doing this to protect citizens. They are doing it for the same reasons the banks and insurance companies lobbied so hard.

President Barack Obama, Timothy Geithner, Ben Bernake, and the Congress are still refusing to commit to limiting executive compensation or controlling and monitoring bailout monies that are yet to be distributed. Why are the people who created the worst financial disaster since the Great Depression being given taxpayer money to fix it? Are they less corrupt or incompetent than before? These companies continue to spend the money that they received from taxpayers to lobby for more taxpayer money. Now, the Supreme Court is considering allowing the companies who lobby your Senators and Represenatives for taxpayer money to also pay for the campaigns of those Senators and Representatives.

Congress has repeatedly failed to control itself. Without an intense non-partisan movement, we will continue on the same path. Please join us.
